Why Is There Radon Gas In My Crawl Space?
In order to understand why there are or may be high concentrations of radon gas in your crawl space, we’ll need to look first at what radon gas is and how it gets into your home. Radon gas is actually found everywhere and in all homes across Ontario.
Radon is a naturally occurring gas. It is colourless, odourless and invisible. Radon is created when uranium, a heavy metal found in the earth, decays. As the uranium in the earth decays, it releases a radioactive gas called radon. Radon gas is typically found in higher concentrations in the basement or other parts of your home that are closest to the ground.
Crawl spaces are often even lower than basements or at least as low, so if you do have high levels of radon in your home, it is likely that your crawlspace will have the highest radon levels.
Radon Gas In Ontario
As mentioned above, radon gas is found in all homes in Ontario. To determine the risk of radon gas exposure for homeowners in the province, Health Canada conducted Canada-wide surveys between 2009 and 2011 to monitor the level of radon gas in the average home. Thanks to this survey, we know know where the highest risk areas for high levels of radon gas exposure are within Ontario. Take a look at the map below to see the findings of this survey.

While there is no guaranteed safe level of radon gas exposure, the Canadian guideline for radon gas in the home is 200 Bq/m3. The map above shows that most of Southern Ontario is designed as “Zone 1 - High,” which means there is a higher chance that if you live in the dark red section, your home will have elevated levels of radon gas.
It is important to note that not every home in a high-risk area will have radon. And similarly, not every home in a low-risk area will have low levels.
Every single home is unique, and the level of radon gas in your home is not only determined by where you live but also a number of factors that are completely unique to your home. Your neighbour could have low levels of radon while your levels are high!
Why You Need Crawl Space Radon Mitigation
Radon gas is considered an indoor air pollutant and at high levels, it poses a serious health hazard. Radon gas exposure is the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smoking individuals.
When you breathe the radioactive radon gas into your lungs, the gas decays into radioactive particles. As these decaying particles release energy into your lungs, it damages lung tissue. This consistent damage over time can significantly increase your risk of lung cancer.
Because radon gas is everywhere, it is impossible to avoid it entirely. However, when individuals are exposed to high levels over many years, this is when serious damage can occur. While there is no known safe amount of radon gas exposure, Health Canada considers the radon limit to be 200 Bq/M3 (Becquerels) indoors.
If you’ve done a radon test and you’ve found high radon gas levels in your crawl space or basement, then it’s time to reach out to the professionals and get a radon mitigation system installed in your home to mitigate this risk.
Crawl Space Radon Mitigation: What To Expect
The first step to remediating radon in your home is to first find out what your average radon levels are. This is done through a radon test– and it’s simple! You can plug in a simple radon test kit in the lowest level of your home and forget about it for 3-12 months. Then, you can send your test in for analysis and the radon experts will let you know what your average in-home radon level is.
When you work with the Radon Gas Guys, we expertly install radon mitigation systems and find permanent solutions to your radon problem. If you have high levels of radon gas, this means that the gas is somehow seeping into your home.
Because we don’t believe in quick fixes, the first step to radon gas removal is to seal any openings in areas of your home where radon gas may be entering. These areas are more often than not found in the basement or crawlspace and include openings around sump pumps, plumbing, windows, hydro entry and even cracks in the foundation.
Once that has been taken care of, it’s time to install the radon gas mitigation system. This simple system is installed within the day and consists primarily of a pipe and fan. This system is installed in the foundation of your house and works by sucking out radon gas and exhausting it outdoors.
You can expect the process to be non-invasive and quick. Our top priority is keeping you safe and feeling comfortable throughout the entire process.

Radon Gas Guys did a great job installing the radon mitigation system in my house. The house was built in 1960, the average radon levels in the basement was 300Bq/m3 in the winter. At the time of writing, less than 24 hours after the installation, the radon level went down from 300 to 50 Bq/m3. The project cost was less than quoted by 2 other radon mitigation companies. The installation was quick and clean. The clear and comprehensive explanation of all steps and details was provided prior to the installation.
