The Cost of a Radon Mitigation System

If you are concerned about radon gas in your home, you may be wondering what is the cost of a radon mitigation system. Because each home is unique, there is not a one-size-fits-all radon gas mitigation solution–the cost depends on a number of factors. In this article, we’ll take a look at these factors and what you can expect when you have a radon mitigation system installed in your home.

What is the Cost of a Radon Mitigation System?

A completed mitigation system by Radon Gas Guys starts at $1,500 and may vary depending on the findings from our thorough, in-home assessment.

At Radon Gas Guys, we are not a “poke and hope” company (i.e. we don’t just drill a hole in your basement floor, install a fan and hope it works!) We understand that there are many factors that can contribute to high levels of radon gas in the home.

Did you know that outside temperatures can change the stack effect on your home and impact the amount of radon that concentrates inside? That’s why we conduct thorough on-site testing to ensure your system will work all year round, despite the weather.

Radon gas concentrates in high levels on the lower floors of your home, because radon gas is emitted from the ground (below, you can learn more about what radon gas is and how it is produced). When you work with Radon Gas Guys, we spend most of our time testing your basement.

We will look for any areas where radon gas could be entering your home, such as:

  • Areas around sump pumps
  • Openings around plumbing
  • Cracks in the floor
  • Hydro entries
  • Areas around windows or basement doors

Once we’ve conducted an assessment, our team will then go in and seal openings around sump pumps, hydro entries and windows. We will fill cracks in the floor and ensure that any other problem areas have been taken care of. Because of this involved and thorough process, a completed system by Radon Gas Guys starts at $1,500 and can vary depending on the assessment results.

Are you the owner of a new home? Is your home covered under the Tarion Warranty? If so, your radon gas mitigation system could be free! if your home is less than seven years old, radon gas mitigation systems are covered under your Tarion Warranty. Watch the video above to learn more.

How is a Radon Gas Mitigation System Installed?

Radon gas mitigation systems are installed by professional and experienced radon guys professionals. While there are some projects that the average homeowner can safely DIY, radon gas mitigation systems must be installed by a professional to ensure its effectiveness throughout the year.

The system is relatively simple, but in order for it to work, it must be installed correctly and any ‘problem areas’ must be dealt with. An improperly installed system could make your radon problem worse!

The radon mitigation system is installed into the foundation of your home. Foundations can be tricky to work with. They require specialized tools to ensure the worker remains safe and that drilling does not cause any damage to the foundation.

At Radon Gas Guys, we have the experience and tools needed to install your system. So, how does it work? The migitation system is made up primarily of a fan and a pipe. After our team fixes any gaps, cracks or openings in your basement (where radon gas could be seeping into your home), the system is installed into the foundation of your home. It essentially works by sucking out radon through the newly installed pipe and venting it outdoors with the fan.

At Radon Gas Guys, we have a 100% guarantee that our remediation system will work. We are committed to your health and safety and will lower your radon levels below the World Health Organization recommended level of 100 Bq/m3.

It’s also important to note that radon gas is only dangerous at high concentrations indoors. Once radon gas is vented outside, it disperses. It is not dangerous outdoors simply because it cannot concentrate to high levels once it leaves your home!

What is Radon Gas?

If you’ve heard about radon gas and radon gas mitigation systems, you may be wondering what exactly is radon gas? Radon gas is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas. It is produced when uranium, a heavy metal found within rocks and the earth’s crust, starts to decay.

Radon gas is radioactive, which means it emits radiation into its surrounding environment. When uranium decays underground, it emits radon gas up through the earth. Radon gas is found virtually everywhere, although some areas have higher concentrations on average based on its naturally occurring environment.

As radon is released upwards from the ground, it can enter your home through your crawlspace, basement or lower levels of your house. Although all areas of a home can be affected, the lowest levels typically contain the highest concentration of radon gas because radon gas is emitted through the ground. At high levels, radon gas can impact your health over time.

How Radon Gas Affects Your Health

More and more Canadians are learning about radon gas. You may have heard that radon gas in your home can impact your health, but how? As mentioned above, radon gas is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas.

Just like carbon monoxide, you will not be able to tell if radon gas is in your home and it is considered an indoor air pollutant. However, unlike carbon monoxide, which poses an immediate threat to your health, radon gas exposure can impact your health over the long term.

The biggest known risk of prolonged radon gas exposure is an increased chance of developing lung cancer. Long-term exposure to radon gas significantly increases your risk of developing lung cancer.

When you breathe in radon gas, the gas goes into your lungs along with the oxygen you breathe. Radon gas breaks down and decays into radioactive particles, which emit energy. This energy is released within your lungs, which causes damage to lung tissue. The consistent damage to your lung tissue over time increases your risk of lung cancer.

annual radon deaths canada

Sadly, radon gas is the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smoking individuals. Annually, radon gas exposure results in 3,200 deaths. To put that in perspective, car accidents result in approximately 1,900 deaths per year and carbon monoxide poisoning results in 300 deaths per year.

New research also shows other potential risks associated with radon gas exposure, such as an increased risk of stroke. As researchers continue to study the long-term impacts of radon gas exposure, we may find out other ways that radon gas can harm our health. Although the cost of a radon gas mitigation system may make you feel uncertain about installing one, the cost to your health of radon in your home is much greater.

Every home in Canada is expected to have some level of radon gas in it. While there is no guaranteed safe level of radon gas exposure, the Canadian guideline for radon gas in the home is 200 Bq/m3. If you conduct a radon gas test and find out that your home has high levels of radon gas, it’s time to contact a radon gas mitigation company to install a system and get your levels back down below the Canadian standard.

Clean install and the numbers don’t lie. Highly recommend if you’re in need of this service!
